HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS (HIV) testing is part of our routine prenatal labs. When you are pregnant, you need to know about HIV, the virus that leads to AIDS. Pregnancy is a time to take care of yourself and get regular medical checkups for your health and your baby's health. Early detection and treatment are your best choices.
**HIV is a disease that weakens the immune system, making it hard for the body to fight infections. HIV is found in body fluids (for example, blood & blood products & semen) and is primarily spread by having unprotected sex or sharing needles with an HIV-infected person. A pregnant woman who is HIV infected or who has AIDS can pass HIV to her baby during pregnancy, delivery, and while breastfeeding.
An HIV test helps you and your baby by alerting you to the need for treatment if your HIV test is positive. Treatment before, during, and after labor and delivery can help decrease the risk of transmitting HIV to your baby. Doctors have learned that if you are infected with HIV, treatment with appropriate medication can greatly reduce your changes of giving HIV to your baby.
**The benefit of knowing truly negative test results is that appropriate measures may be taken to prevent infection in the future. It may be necessary to retest periodically to confirm test results or if future exposure occurs.
**The benefit of knowing positive test results is that appropriate treatment is now available which may prevent or delay progression of disease & measures may be learned to prevent infecting others.
**You can protect yourself from HIV by using a latex/polyurethane condom (male or female) when you have sex, even if you are pregnant. Do not share needles for injecting drugs, steroids, vitamins, tattooing, or piercing.
**You can contact the following for additional information: Call the California HIV/AIDS Hotline at 1-800-367-2437 for HIV referral and consultation resources including experts on prenatal HIV treatment in your local area; all California hospitals are offering rapid HIV testing in labor and delivery. Rapid HIV Testing delivers HIV test results in as little as 20 minutes; you can also contact the California Department of Public Health at www.cdph.ca.gov Successful breastfeeding starts prior to delivery. Have you signed up for the breastfeeding class yet? Studies show women who attend breastfeeding classes are
more likely to succeed. Ask your nurse to help you sign up for the class.

Did you know that studies show that breastfed children have fewer and less serious illnesses than those who never receive breast milk, including reduced risk of SIDS and less childhood cancer and diabetes?

Did you know that breast milk provides the optimal mix of nutrients and antibodies necessary for your baby to thrive?

Did you know that research shows that breastfed babies have higher IQ scores, as well as better brain and nervous system development?

Did you know that families who breastfeed save money? Not only is breast milk free, but there are savings on health care costs and related time lost to care for sick children.

Did you know that mothers who breastfeed enjoy decreased risks of breast and ovarian cancer, anemia and osteoporosis?. Breastfeeding also provides good emotional health for mom and baby as a close bond is formed through the act of breastfeeding.

Did you know that breastfeeding benefits the environment? Breast milk may protect the baby from the effects of pollution. Also, none of the tin, paper, plastic, or energy necessary for preparing, packaging, and transporting artificial baby milk is needed when breastfeeding. This cuts down on the pollution and garbage disposal problems.

Did you know that research shows that exclusive breastfeeding naturally spaces pregnancies?

http://www.babyfriendlyusa.org/eng/07.html Protect Yourself and Your Family from the Flu Virus

Influenza is a potentially serious illness. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing by people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something - such as a surface or object - with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose. Illness with the new H1N1 virus has ranged from mild to severe.
In seasonal flu, certain people are at high risk of serious complications. This includes people 65 years and older, children younger than five years old, pregnant women, and people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions.
According to the Centers of Disease Control (CDC), people infected with seasonal and novel H1N1 flu shed virus and may be able to infect others from 1 day before getting sick to 5 to 7 days after.
Frequent hand washing will help protect you. Wash with soap and warm water or use an alcohol-based gel hand cleaner, rubbing the gel on your hands until dry. Do not add water to the hand cleaner. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with your hands Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Wash your hands!!
You are at risk for the flu virus if you have: been around any one with any flu symptoms in last 7 days family member being evaluated for the H1N1(Swine Flu)
Symptoms of the Flu include: Fever of 100.0 or higher now or within the last 24 hours with any of the following symptoms: Sore Throat, Cough, Runny Nose, Short of Breath, Headache, Body Aches, Nasal congestion, Fatigue.
Call KP on-call at 888-576-6225 to speak with a RN
Go to Urgent Care or see your physician

CDC recommends that people with novel H1N1 flu avoid contact with others as much as possible. If you are sick with flu-like illness,
CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities.
Please refer to the CDC website at http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/sick.htm If you have flu symptoms, treatment with antiviral medications will be considered based on your risk factors for severe disease and the severity of your illness.
You can avoid spreading the flu to others by: cleaning your hands with Waterless Antimicrobial Hand gels or foams putting on a mask avoiding close contact with other people, by staying at least 3 feet from others.
